Workplace Mediation
Many employees experience difficulties at work,
whether with line managers or other colleagues, which can sometimes
lead to a situation of poor communication and difficult relationships.
Such difficulties can result in either extended periods of sickness
leave or the involvement of an Employment Tribunal. The use of mediation
to try to address problems at an early stage is increasingly common.
Many employers use the services of an independent mediator when
these situations arise.
Mediation Hertfordshire offers a workplace mediation
service, provided by trained workplace mediators, who work with
both the employer and employees to address relevant issues and facilitate
an agreement.
There is currently a pilot project underway to explore how best to develop this service to meet the needs of organisations and individuals working and living in Hertfordshire. Findings and recommendations from this research will be available in March/April 2011. Elaine Mercer is the Project Development Worker. Elaine is speaking to and meeting a range of stakeholders to gain an accurate understanding of needs and the potential market. Elaine can be contacted via the office or on elaine.mercer@mediationherts.org.uk
Workplace mediations are becoming increasingly common as employers and Government strive to find ways of avoding costly and protracted disputes, which affect staff morale and impact on business efficiency. In our straitened economic environment, employees are feeling less confident about job security and have concerns for their own future. Public sector organisations will be particularly affected by forthcoming changes to the way services will be delivered. All of these factors are affecting workplace relationships and increasing the need for an impartial and confidential service to offer support.
A working definition of mediation is as follows;
"Mediation is a structured process whereby an impartial mediator facilitates communication between those in dispute in order for them to understand each other better and for them to come up with mutually acceptable solutions that will improve the working relationship in the future." (Nora Doherty, PMR Ltd.)
The charges for workplace mediation are available
on application to the office.
Room To Talk
Most mediation concerning young people and homelessness is undertaken
by the Herts Young
Homeless Group. Mediation Hertfordshire no longer provides a Room to Talk service. Enquiries about intergenerational mediation involving family members can be made, but charges will apply.
