Peer Mediation Project

Peer Mediation

Mediation Hertfordshire has been working in schools for over 5 years, training children in peer mediation skills.

Peer mediation helps children who have had arguments with each other to talk together. Mediators do not give advice or offer solutions, but allow students to find their own answers to their problems. As with mediation between adults, peer mediation is voluntary, confidential, impartial, non judgemental and independent. The benefits to the school are great; a calmer school environment, help for young people with friendship and relationship problems and with stresses, whether at home or at school. Young mediators gain skills for life including the ability to communicate, negotiate, facilitate and co-operate.

Over the years, Mediation Hertfordshire has been funded to do this important work by the Local Network Fund and Herts County Council's Childrens Targeted Services Fund.  In 2009-11, the fund is supporting work in Watford, as well as the development of a Peer Mediation Network for young mediators across other areas. We have developed a training package, which is regularly amended following feedback and suggestions from the students and schools. Training is also offered to both teaching and non-teaching staff, and advice is available about setting up and supporting a scheme within a school.

Our Peer Mediation Project Worker is Jan de-Vyott who can be contacted via the office.  Christine Key is invoved in this work as a freelance trainer.
